Severe weather is the occurrence of extreme weather conditions that can cause significant damage to the built and/or natural environment as well as potential loss of life.
Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, extreme winds, tornados, tropical cyclones, heatwaves, and frost and snow, all fall under the umbrella term of ‘severe weather.’
As the climate warms, severe weather events in the Bay of Plenty are becoming more frequent and more intense.
