Following a magnitude 8.8 earthquake near Kamchatka, Russia at 11:25am on Wednesday 30 July, NEMA, the National Emergency Management Agency, sent out a Tsunami Advisory and an EMA advising people of the beach and marine threat to the entire New Zealand coastline.
As of 8am on Friday 1 August, though beach and marine tsunami conditions were observed across the east coast of New Zealand overnight, the threat for the Bay of Plenty has been lifted, however strong currents and surges can injure and drown people, so we encourage people to take care in and around the water.
As of 1:58pm on Friday 1 August, NEMA cancelled the National Advisory for the whole country.
